I just started using the Verizon "VZAccess Manager" so I can get the internet when I am on the road and don't have access to wireless, etc.

When I am using Airport or cable, parallels starts fine and everything works.

When I am accessing the internet using the USB modem, I get the message:
"Parallels Desktop is unable to attach to the network adapter unknown. If this is the first time you see this message, ...."

I cannot get access to my work e-mail if this doesn't work --- so since work is paying for the USB Modem, I better figure this out.

    HELP !

I will add this to the list of symptoms which may help troubleshoot the problem.

When using the USBModem, the MAC System Preferences>Network shows only the USB connection. It does not display the Parallels connections.

This must be the cause --- but WHY?

Yes, we are aware about this problem, we increased priority for this problem, and working to find a solution.
I hope I can give more information next week

The ifconfig and sudo was related to Parallels Server, it was a mistake, John only wants to know the brand and the model.

There should be a sticker on the USB Modem with the manufacturers information and model.

    Perhaps UTStarcom UM175?

Verizon is just rebranding it, alltel has the same model rebranded too, it's most probably a UTStarcom.

    Same happens to me

And it's a real hassle to have to disconnect to be able to enter parallels. I have to disconnect, enter parallels and connect again which is kind of stupid to do every time. Parallels does work well with the modem as long as you don't start parallels while connected.

It can't be that tricky, some startup checking that draws the wrong conclusion... Parallels is vital for me and otherwise than this I'm a fan of the product... please correct it as soon as possible.

My modem is a Huawei HSPA E270

    Best regards

    thanks for the workaround

it works if you dont start paralells while using the usb modem. i experienced the same problem while using t-mobile's web'n'walk stick USB modem in munich, germany. annoying problem though. wasted the better part of an hour until i found this 'solution'.

Argh. The solution of starting parallels first and then later starting the USB Modem is NOT working for me. If I could that would be acceptable. Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot and perhaps get going the way others are?

You can submit ticket to support with details about models, and I pass it to developers

Make sure that you are switching to a network location that has the parallels drivers installed. That could help.

    A solution (Parallels v4)

Same problem happens with v4. This happens because when it installs, parallels network drivers are installed on the active location, thus if you want to open parallels when the modem is connected, with a different network location, it won't find them

The fix is simple: just install parallels twice. That is once without your modem and again (finish the conversion first) with your modem. This way parallels network drivers will get installed in both network locations and you will never think of this problem ever again... well, only to come back to this thread and say it worked LOL

    best regards to all

PD: all this is assuming you upgrade to v4. Apart from a few minor glitches, it's worth it and much faster

Hmmm I was wrong. It does work, but only once. When the dialer restarts, it erases the Parallels drivers and the only way is to reinstall parallels.

Couldn't Parallels reinstall its two network drivers when opening as other applications do?

It is not necessary to reinstall Parallels. The adapters can be restored from menu Parallels Desktop->Preferences->Networking button "Restore Defaults".

The feature for handling USB modems (tracking change of location) is in the ToDo list of Parallels Desktop 4.0
