    UPDATE:

I just tried this on my MacBook Pro and everything works...what's the problem with my Mac Pro?

I have searched all over first, so sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have created a support ticket and got no response.

I'm hearing so much about SmartSelect, but I can't even get past the first step...I'm not sure what is going on.

I have spent over 2 hours reading the documentation and trying to figure out why when I go to the SmartSelect Edit menu, it only says, "List is Empty".

I have enabled the folder and application sharing.

Further, I cannot get my Windows applications to show up in the dock. I disabled this in the 2.X version, but have tried to re-enable it in 3.X. I have select both "Always", and "In Coherence Only" in the Shared Applications section, but it never shows my app icon.

All I want to do is open .xslx (Excel) files in Windows automagically. (By the way, how does QuickLook in Leopard show me my spreadsheet...that is really cool?)

I have searched the knowledge base and all over the internet...why is my menu empty? I have reinstalled parallels tools and rebooted twice.

I am out of options...I hope someone can help me.

When you are running Parallels, can you see in Applications - Edit - Microsoft Excel
if you can see select it and Edit, and on right part click select All

When I wen to to Applications - Edit, all I got was a single submenu item (disabled) that reads, "List is Empty".

...notice that I am now using the past tense...I had to edit my post just now...the problem is now solved.

When I first launched the VM, I did it from my wife's user account, and received an error stating that the .hdd file was corrupt. I noticed that I was the owner and everyone else only had read access...hmmmm.....

...so I switched to my account and changed the entire VM folder and all enclosed items to be owned by me and gave everyone else read/write access. When I next launched Parallels, I was able to populate the SmartSelect list!!

I can't believe I didn't find anyone else with this problem before...the .hdd file was "upgraded" running under my account, so only that file was accessible by me. I don't know why, but SmartSelect will not work unless the the other files have the same owner as the .hdd file...weird.

You might want to post a sticky or something.

Now the only problem is that the file associations don't work in my wife's account using the same VM...the Windows apps don't show up in the dock either, although the SmartSelect menu IS populated. However, when I select Microsoft Excel, the only application choices I get for .xlsx files are Finder or Archive Utility...the VM didn't seem to remember to start up in Coherence mode either, which is how I left it in my account.

Any idea on how to properly share a VM across user accounts? I was doing that okay with 2.X.

    Thanks again,
    sking

I finally got a response from Support, and I believe my second issue is also resolved now:

    E-Mail:

I posted this in the forums before I got a response from Support.

I found the problem on my own, but now have another issue. However, you have answered it...I never thought about the Window Application folder. I switch to my wife's account and removed that folder and repopulated. Then, it worked. Switched back to my account and noticed that the Windows Application folder was only readable by me, so I changed that, and it worked in my account too.

Went back to my wife's account and verified that it works in both accounts now. Thanks.

    Dear Stephen,

as for "SmartSelect Edit menu" issue, could you, please, check if there is Window Application folder in VM folder? If there is a such folder, please, delete it and try to populate again.

As for showing applications on the dock, please, make sure that the option "shared folders" is enabled.

    Feel free to contact us,

Just one addition, if you ar switching between accounts, do not suspend VM, shut it down,
VM suspended under one account, gives you error under another account when you try to resume it

    Thanks again, John.

All is well now...sorry for blindly pasting the e-mail. Yeah, I found out about suspending the VM when switching users.

Thanks again for all your help :)
