This is driving me to distraction:

I think I'm following instruction to the letter, VM is off, I then select my virtual machine, click file, clone, then I try and select the folder I want to back it up to - under More Options, then Choose but when I try and click on the small Finder window nothing happens, just the standard Mac thud noise. Help!

I am not sure I can understand all steps
But cloning it is actually copying VM folder in Documents/Parallels

? Not sure if I understand your answer: I'm simply trying to clone my VM to my external drive - I have done this in the past with no problem.

The 'steps' that you refer to are those set out in Parallels Desktop for Mac user guide from http://www.parallels.com/en/download...User_Guide.pdf on page 243

Restarted Mac to begin with no change, finally managed to specify path only for the message: "There isn't enough free hard disk space to store this virtual machine clone. Clear some disk space and try again or click OK to proceed."

But my hard drive has 224GB free and Windows XP folder's size is around 93GB!!? Should I click OK to proceed anyway?

I suppose external drive is formated as FAT32, in this case the largest file size is 2 gb, but disk is larger, you need to format it as HFS in order to clone there

John, I'm afraid I genuinely don't understand you - this is too technical for me.

To reiterate, I cloned the VM to the drive without problem a couple of weeks ago. The VM now is still around the same size as before.

I also have other files on the hard drive much larger than 2gb.

Could you please try to copy VM folder to external disk?

    As requested my diskutil list:-

    /dev/disk0
    #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
    0: GUID_partition_scheme *298.1 Gi disk0
    1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 297.8 Gi disk0s2
    /dev/disk1
    #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
    0: Apple_partition_scheme *465.8 Gi disk1
    1: Apple_partition_map 31.5 Ki disk1s1
    2: Apple_Driver43 64.0 Ki disk1s2
    3: Apple_Driver_ATA 64.0 Ki disk1s3
    4: Apple_FWDriver 112.0 Ki disk1s4
    5: Apple_HFS LaCie 465.8 Gi disk1s6

My main VM is located on my imac's hard drive (the last successful clone and the copied VM you just requested are on my external Lacie drive).
