    Hello,

I just downloaded a new trial version of Parrallels and running into some problems.
I have a MacBook Pro 17 with MacOsX 10.5.2 using BootCamp With WinXP Sp2 already running.

I tired using boot camp via the VM but is is stuck on the Black Screen with message
    Boot from hard drive ...

Nothing hapens and have to stop Parrallels VM (Actions>Stop)

I tried creating another new VM for Bootcamp follwowing the Guide but same results.

Any idea what can be wrong?

    Thanks
    JM

    Hi John,

Sorry I did not understand to run Terminal. BTW I am a Mac / OSX newbie and just learned about Terminal.
I do have some past Unix experience that should be handy.

My need has now changed since I have redone the Boot Camp partition and WinXp install.
Bots OS/X and WinXP runs smootlhy.

I also decided to create 3 partitions using one for shared data (FAT32) between OS/X and WinXp.
    1:OSX
    2:Data:FAT32
    3:Boot Camp-WinXp:FAT32

Now Parrallel complains that I do not have a standard Boot Camp install (3 partitions VS 2 I assume).
I looked in the manual but could not figure out hot to setup my VM for using the Boot Camp partition.

Can you point me in the right direction?

    Thanks
    JM

    Here you go.
    jmv$ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
    #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
    0: GUID_partition_scheme *186.3 Gi disk0
    1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk0s1

4: Microsoft Basic Data WINDOWS 31.1 Gi disk0s4
    /dev/disk1
    #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

If Windows was installed 3: Microsoft Basic Data DATA 60.0 Gi disk0s3 you need to copy data from partition 4 , and format it as HFS
if on 4, perform the same with partition 3

Unplug 80 gb disk(second) when you create and boot VM

    Hi John,

Windows XP was installed and running fine on Part 4: Microsoft Basic Data WINDOWS 31.1 Gi disk0s4 (FAT32)
Part 3: Microsoft Basic Data DATA 60.0 Gi disk0s3 (FAT32) has my shared DATA between OSX on Part 2 and Windows Part 4.

This is working fine for me.
I am not sure I understand what you want me to do to be able to run Parrallel from the Boot Camp Windows partition 4?

    Reformatting as HFS ??

Thanks for your help and patience.

Parallels Desktop in Current version cannot understand 2 MS partitions
    The simple scheme is following:
    EFI
    HFS
    Windows (Either Fat32 or NTFS)
2 Windows partitions prevent Parallels to recognize correct Windows installation

    Hi John,

If I understand correctly for Parallels to work woth a Boot Camp partition
I would have to combine the 2 FAT32 partitions into 1 so I en up with 1 HFS and 1 FAT32 Win install.

    Would that work?

If so what would be the quickest way to combine them without having to re-install Windows?

    Thanks
    JM

Yes it should work, just copy data from partition where Windows is not installed and format it as HFS

    Hi John,

I cannot afford to format as HFS as I need this data available for Windows also.
So I figured I would need to combine the 2 FAT32 partitions into 1.

Do you know what the best approach is to do this without having to re-install my Windows?
What is the easiest method to save my Windows image and recover it once I have combined the 2 FAT32 partitions into 1?

    Thanks for your help,
    JM

It is impossible by standard software, partition 3 is before partition 4
But when you use Parallels those folders are accessible for writing from Mac OS side
Also I am not sure for now any software can correctly write data to GPT , most of software is for MBR
also vice verse (You can use Shared Folders) and write to HFS partition from Windows

When you say : "(You can use Shared Folders) and write to HFS partition from Windows "
I assume you mean from within Parrallel correct ? Cause I thought this was not possible directly from Windows.
I need to the ability to write also with standalon windows.

Also I do not understand when you refer to GPT and MBR.

I think Winclone may help save and restore my Windows install but i think it only supports NTFS.

    Same problem for me

    Hi,

I have spent more time than what is healthy on the very same problem, including repartition the drive, uninstalling Parallels (incl lib files etc... with the terminal), reinstall Vista Ultimate and reinstalling Parallels 3.0, creating various VM machines but everything I do gives same result, boot from hard drive... and nothing more happens.

I have tried to specify the partition in vista.pvs as Disk 0:0 image = Boot Camp; disk0s3

    Here is my diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
    #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
    0: GUID_partition_scheme *298.1 Gi disk0
    1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS Dionysis HD 235.9 Gi disk0s2
    3: Microsoft Basic Data 61.9 Gi disk0s3

As far as I understand I only have one windows formatted partition...

Running a MacBook Pro, 2,33, 3GB/320GB and OSX 10.5.4 Parallels build 5608, Bootcamp, Vista Ultimate.

I would really appreciate some help on this matter, it is driving me nuts!

By the way, Vista runs like a charm when i boot it from bootcamp so the install and partition works.

    Thanks

    Carl

    EDIT:
I checked around a bit and found the post from John on the 23:d,

    Free email support is available

Backup VM as described in Parallels Desktop for Mac user guide from http://www.parallels.com/en/download...User_Guide.pdf on page 243
and perform Windows repair as in http://kb.parallels.com/en/5138

I followed the steps and the installer says that Vista does not need repair.

So I am back on square one again...

    Hi Oltrix,

Thank-you very much for posting this information.

On one hand I am glad to see that I am not the only one dealing with this issue.
On the other hand I sympathize that you haven't been able to get Parrallels working on your system.

As far as I am concerned I have decided to postpone my Parrallers setup for a while as I need to move on with some deliverables. Merging my 2 FAT32 Partitions into one at this stage will be time consuming and based on your experience it appears there is no guarantee it will work.

Hopefully, John will be able to assist you. I am sure he is quite busy but had been very helpful to others to resolve their issued. Maybe others on this forum that have overcome will provide some input.

Keep me posted on your progress. I will give this a try back later also.

    Good luck,
    JM
