Hi, I have a Windows XP VM which occupies around 1.7gb space on my HD and has IE6 installed. I would also like to run IE7 and from reading through a few other threads on this forum it seems best to create a clone of my current VM and then simply install IE7 on that.

Now, that's great but on the one with IE7 that is all that I would be using so is there any way of creating something that would be less than 1.7gb on my HD? I only need a very basic system with IE7 on and nothing else really. For everything else I would use the original VM I created.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Google for nLite, it will let you create a streamlined XP CD and get rid of everything you don't need, with some work maybe you'll get a XP installation with IE7 with a few hundred MBs.

Thanks for this - found nLite so I'll give that a go right now and report back

Umm, the first attempt wasn't that good! I removed just about everything and when I installed it it didn't even resemble XP - looked more like Win98. I think this will be a bit of trial and error.

Tweaking Windows is Microsoft license violation, why just not to install OS in default configuration and remove drivers cache, the same system, without any nLite

Can you please let me know how to remove the drivers cache? Is there anything else I can remove?

Thanks for this. I'll have a go and see what it reduces the size of XP by. To be honest it's only because I want to test websites with IE7 anyway. My other VM is great with XP and fully functional.

I don't agree that streamlining a Windows XP of a license that I bought is an illegality in anyway, show me in the EULA where it does not permit it.

If you want to use nLite (which I recommend), I suggest you consult the nLite forums to determine what you should and should not remove, the visual aspect you're refering, of looking like Win98, it's because you disabled/removed 'Themes' (visual styles).

(You can also remove the drivers cache with nLite, and make all the tweaks the noewin article refers to with nLite prior to installing)

Yep, like I suspected, it is NOT a Windows license violation.

It IS a license violation of nLite if it's used for commercial use, but for that there's MS OPK.

But we're talking here of personal use, and what nLite only does is simplify and automatize procedures that are documented by MS itself.

Let me clarify, unless you do not remove any Windows part it is not license violation, but if you remove files related to Windows functionality - it is , for example Themes

Now, this was all seeming to be a bit of a pain and a long drawn out process with hit and miss results. I found this just now though http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE which seems to be working okay at the moment.
