Just purchased a new iMac and also bought Parallels. I put in the installation CD, go though the initial steps (agree to software license, choose destination disk) and then when I hit "continue" and the installer goes to the installation step, that is it, nothing happens. The installer is stuck on "Preparing Parallels desktop." It has been sitting at this point for more than an hour. I already tried a force quit, rebooted and tried to install again and got to this same point with the same result. Anyone know what is going on?
    Thanks!
Add: I have not installed or used bootcamp.
There is nothing from Parallels already installed on my hard drive (spotlight finds nothing).
This is a brand new iMac 2.66Ghz, 4GB RAM. 10.5.3

Thanks for the link. That worked. I still don't understand why Parallels is selling a retail product that doesn't work out of the box.

Stuck on "Preparing Parallels desktop." Help~!

My situation is the same as the questioner below. This user's problem is the same as mine, except my computer is a 2008 17" Macbook Pro. Like the other user's complaint I get stuck at "Preparing Parallels Desktop. The URL:

    http://download.parallels.com/v3/en/GA/Parallels-Desktop-5608-Mac-en.dmg

Is a dead end. I'm extremely frustrated and agitated.

If I click on the link provided in post #7, a download of the latest build starts immediately. That didn't work for you?

Parallels Won't Install & I'm Thinking VMware Fusion

"John@Parallels, "Do you mean you cannot install from downloaded file?"

I cannot install using the URLs suggested here and I cannot not install off the Parallels CD I bought for $79 plus Tax from the Apple Store. The URL referenced in this thread leads to a white screen. I suppose I could download the free trial version but when the free trial version is expired I'd be right back here again -- unable to install because the installer is stuck on "Preparing Parallels desktop."

I'm going to take Parallels to the local Apple Store where I bought it and tell them my experience. If the Apple Genius Bar people cannot solve this, then I'll trash the Parallels CD and buy VMware Fusion. (I cannot return opened software to the Apple Store but the Apple Store can experience my problem firsthand.)

I've been working with computers since the 1980s including IBM XT and the Apple ][e so I am not a neophyte.

I agree with you that it is terrible (and inexcusable) that they are selling a piece of software that will not work out of the box, but the link above should start a download of the latest build, which will be on your desktop. I just clicked on the link and that is what happens for me. It may open a blank page in your browser, but at the same time a file should be downloading. I installed that file, and just added the serial number (when prompted) from my CD and everything works fine.

I ran the 10.5.4 software update yesterday and Parallels seems to be ok, but don't know how the update would affect the installation process.

    DOESN'T WORK http://download.parallels.com/v3/en/...608-Mac-en.dmg.

"We are checking situation on our side and with ISPs, we found several problems and working to resolve them, meanwhile please download build 5608 following link bellow:
    http://download.parallels.com/v3/en/...608-Mac-en.dmg

Check with my ISP. My ISP is Time Warner Roadrunner Cable.

Why does the Paralells Staff keep telling me to download that link when that link is the question.! The whole problem here is the inability of using this link http://download.parallels.com/v3/en/...608-Mac-en.dmg.

What is the business of of having ... (dots) in the link? Does that pose a problem? Just for the record I do not use any antivirus or other non-standard programs. Also for the record I tried using that link on both a 17" Macbook Pro and a Mac Mini so it is not machine problems.

My time here will be fugacious since Parallels admits it is a problem and they are working on it. VMware Fusion is calling out my name.

    Good luck.

The URL is wrong the correct URL is:

    http://download.parallels.com/v3/en/GA/Parallels-Desktop-5608-Mac-en.dmg

Plain text (copy & paste this to the Location bar if the above doesn't work):
    download.parallels.com/v3/en/GA/Parallels-Desktop-5608-Mac-en.dmg

For comparison the bad URL in plain text:
    download.parallels.com/v3/en/...608-Mac-en.dmg

In the copy/pasting and quoting in this thread, of the URL, the abbreviation substituted the real URL, apparently.

I questioned the validity of URL's dots on July 10th HELP PLEASE!

Yes I suspected that in a message I left on July 10th I wrote:

"What is the business of of having ... (dots) in the link? Does that pose a problem?"

It seems the dots (ellipsis) were indeed a problem but no one bothered to respond to my concern until now.

Unfortunately feeling abandoned I was left to my own devices for getting the product so I may have messed things up. I went to http://www.parallels.com/en/download/ and then maneuvered to a place where it was possible to download build 5608.

So I downloaded build 5608 from there and I used the license number from the back of the purchased boxed CD jacket to apply my paid license number.

Now I am told I should use http://download.parallels.com/v3/en/GA/Parallels-Desktop-5608-Mac-en.dmg. The download that I found is now spread throughout my Macbook Pro so is there an UNinstaller so I can get rid of the previous download and replace it with the new link you have kindly posted?

So far my computer with Parallels makes thinks go painfully slow and required rebooting several times . . . kinda like Windows. It seems resistant to shutting down so that the circulating beach ball whirled for up to a half hour when all I was trying to do was shut down to regain control of the computer. Also Parallels seems to be allergic to my screen saver causing many crashes. As soon as I finish this I will remove my screen saver. I am NOT using any antivirus programs.

And all these problems occurred WITHOUT even a single Windows programs on the Mac~! ::::sigh::::: between the cost of Parallels and the cost of a new, valid Windows XP disk I've paid out $167 with despair.

So what do I do now? Will my CD jacket license number work if I download it again using the URL you have now provided?

    Thank you/Tom

    First step
    1. Use uninstaller
    2. http://kb.parallels.com/en/4790
    3. What is previous build version on CD, if it is up to 3xxx, you cannot use build 5608
    but use 3224
    parallels.com/en/download/file/en/GA/Parallels-Desktop-3224-Mac-en.dmg
    Add http://www.
    4. if version starts from 4xxx
    download.parallels.com/v3/en/GA/Parallels-Desktop-5608-Mac-en.dmg
    add http://
