I'm working with a friend whose hard drive crashed. The Apple Store was able to recover most of her data, including the windows xp folder and files that parallels uses. We re installed Parallels and pointed the VM to the winxp.hdd but when it boots we get a "A disk read error occurred." I am trying to boot from the windows xp CD from within parallels (i set the VM to boot from Cd first) and i press any key get into the windows xp disk to get into recovery mode to try and do chkdsk or fixboot. However it only shows a black screen and no CD access. It just freezes. I tried to create a new VM with the same CD and it boots fine. Anyway to salvage the .HDD file to recover some data?

It actually depends from how it crashed, if it crashed on header, I can only suggest following solution to retrieve data
Copy that winxp.hdd folder to Windows Computer and run R-Studion ntfs on that image
