    Greetings!

I have few job specific web applications (such as Windows Update Website) that do no work under "Shared networking" connection in guest OS.

All the applications have the same behaviour - on some step they begin to wait for so long time for something...

For instance, Windows Update Website launches normaly in Internet Explorer. When I tell it to search for updates it begins to search for long time and exits with "check for your internet connection" message.

For some reasons the "Shared networking" connection is the only I can use. I also tried following steps, but they didn`t solve the problem:

    1) http://kb.parallels.com/en/4790
    2) Terminal command "sudo -killall -HUP pvsnatd"

My Mac OS uses an Airport connection configured in default way. My computer configuration is:

    Type of computer: MacBook Air
Host OS: Mac OS X 10.5.3 Leopard
Parallels Desktop for Mac 3, Build 5608
Guest OS/Remote OS: Windows XP Professional SP2

Could you help me to solve the issue please?

Ok, I can see that Parallels Desktop drivers are loaded.
    Second step
    1. Is there any specific configuration on router
    2. Do you have firewall in Windows (3rd party)?
    3. Antivirus?
if 2 and 3 is true, please disable them and check again

I think not, because if I select Bridged Networking mode, while making absolutely no changes in router configuration, I get normally working connection!

Which "specific configuration on router" should I look for?

    No and no...
    Nothing to disable.

I've installed WireShark on guest Windows XP.
    What should I do next?

Capture traffic while going to microsoft.com and searching for updates.
Save to file and post here

I've made two files for Shared Networking Mode (Bad Case) and Bridged Networking Mode (Good Case). Both are stored in WireShark format.
Here is the download link http://rapidshare.com/files/124496362/Windows_Update_Traffic_Log.zip.html.

I have no proxy at all. The only difference between the cases is networiking mode:

    Shared Networking - Negative Result
    Bridged Networking - Positive Result

It's not only the case for Windows Update. As I've mentioned before I use few web-based applications that have the same behaviour.

    What else to try?

I mean router settings, or AirPort settings

Which router or AirPort settings can be significant for such difference between Shared Networking and Bridged Networking?

I put my computer IP address in DMZ on the router. I also forwarded ports 80 and 443 to my guest Windows XP IP address (10.211.55.3) using Network tab in Parallels Desktop main Preferences panel.

    Still no effect...

Is there any way to check whether or not the packets incoming to my router are really fowarded to ports 80 and 443 of my guest Windows XP?

    Any other hints?

I suppose you can try from opposite side to narrow problem
    1. Try to assign public IP,if you have, to VM (temporary), if you can download Windows Updates,
    2. Then you need to check your router settings, than try to just use Shared Networking, without any redirection, Redirection is used to allow access from Internet, not to get Internet access

Could you please describe me in more detail about the way to do it?
I have network configuration as follows:

Public IP <---> Wi-Fi Router <---> Host Mac OS X + Airport Wi-Fi Client <---> guest Windows XP

As is mentioned in Microsoft KB, ports 80 and 443 should be open. In Shared Networking I have normal websites working, except some web-based Active X applications, such as Windows Update.

    What should I try then?

OK! There are three steps in KB:

    1. Clear the proxy cache and configure it to exclude the Windows Update site.

I don't have any proxy at all, so I skip this...

    2. Open port 80.

    What does it mean?
I have an access port 80 from guest Windows XP as I can see websites in Internet Explorer. Should I open port 80 for connections incomming into guest OS???

    3. Add Windows Update to the Trusted Sites Zone.

    It's already there...
