    Perhaps someone from Parallels can fill in this error report with some real information...
    "The Hard Disk 1 is set to use the Boot Camp while Boot Camp is not installed on this computer"."
    ...and tell me what Parallels thinks it's looking for, so I can go fix it?

    How do I get around this silly error? It prevents my Macbook Pro's Boot Camp partition from being booted. It also prevents me identifying the proper boot parameters for Ubuntu which is even as we speak successfully installed and bootable off the main hard drive, but not through Parallels. However, the error doesn't provide me with enough information to actually do anything about it.

    The current layout of my hard disk is shown below. I'm sure there's something wrong with it, but the text of error doesn't help identify it.

    The windows partition is in 4 and was originally created by Apple's Boot camp, although the partition table has been rewritten by Gparted since to try and get Parallels to boot ubuntu (in partition 3). I wondered whether the ubuntu partition needed a boot flag. I guess it's this partition table edit which has caused all the trouble.

    Currently only ubuntu boots natively. Windows reports UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, and no Parallels VMs will even launch because of this silly error, although previously the non-booting windows partition was launchable in Parallels by specifying the disk partition identifier, as per http://kb.parallels.com/en/5063

    diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
    #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
    0: GUID_partition_scheme *93.2 Gi disk0
    1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 75.6 Gi disk0s2
    3: Microsoft Reserved 8.4 Gi disk0s3
    4: EFI 9.0 Gi disk0s4

    >>>>>>>>>

    Stop reading now if you hate rants. The important information is above.

    Rhetorical question: Why does Parallels feel the need to require Boot Camp integration and sanity check all kinds of other meaningless settings rather than just booting an OS from a specified disk partition when I tell it to. Is it to punish me for trying to install Ubuntu and climb out of the Apple walled garden?

    Parallels refuses to run from partitions if it doesn't believe that Boot Camp is configured.
    It merely states...
    "The Hard Disk 1 is set to use the Boot Camp while Boot Camp is not installed on this computer"."

    This is bad for so many reasons that I can't list them all. For example...

    * This is false. Boot Camp WAS INDEED used to install windows on the proper Partition because you made me do it! After reformatting my whole machine to put Mac OS on a single partition (the only way Apple's Boot Camp would accept) then installing windows with Boot Camp on that partition (the only way that Parallels would accept) it is extremely irritating that Parallels is not playing ball here.

    * There is no need for Parallels to conspire with Boot Camp anyway - there are full-fledged bootable partitions on both disk0s3 (Ubuntu) and disk0s4 (Windows), both of which have successfully booted more than once already while I was trying to get Parallels to recognise them. Ubuntu still boots natively, and Windows booted both natively and even through Parallels at least once before. Both are now being deliberately ignored by Parallels because of this unhelpful error handling routine.

    * This is not an error report which meets professional standards, such as 'cannot find partition named 'Boot Camp', or GPT inconsistent with MBR. The developer clearly wrote some code to check for something, but couldn't be bothered to report what is actually wrong. This means I can do nothing about it, unless someone can give me more information.

    More information is available in the log files. Check the following log files:
    * ~/Library/Parallels/Bootcamp.log
    * ~/Library/Parallels/BootcampOSP.log

    Neither of those files (or indeed the directories) exist on my system.
