Anyone know why tools begins the install but stops dead in it's tracks after about 5 green progress bars resulting in the need to reset windows?

This has happend so often that it corrupted the Parallels VM. Parallels is back in working order now but the freeze is still on.

    Mac OS leopard.
    Parallels Build 5582
    Parallels 3.0

    Hello,

do you have any error messages or crash logs?
At what stage does the installation freeze?
Please create a backup of "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield" folder, remove the folder and try to install the software. Restore the folder from backup if you encounter any problems after that and write me back.

    Best regards,
    Stacey

Did what you suggested and Nope. No go

The setup status is stuck with 5 green progress bars and the words "Parallels Tools is configuring your new software installation". I'm gonna have to reset windows again. If I don't find answer to this soon I may have to go with VmWare Fusion. I have already lost to many Parallels VM Machines too corruption to continue down this road of frustration. It shouldn't be this hard to maintain parallels.

    Fixed my Tools install problem

Thanks Stacey, that fixed my tools install that's been bugging me since pre 3.0 versions of Parallels. I haven't looked for a solution in a while, but I just tried this and the install didn't error out.

    X5driver,
please open 'My Computer', select 'Local Disk (C:)'.
There in 'temp' folder find 'parallels-tools-install.log' and in 'Windows' folder find 'setupapi.log'.

    Best regards,
    Stacey

    Hello,

    please do the following:
    1. Start VM.
    2. In menubar click 'Devices' -> 'CD/DVD-Rom' -> 'Connect image' and select 'vmtools.iso'.
    3. Cancel the installation of Parallels Tools.
    4. Open 'My Computer', right-click on 'Parallels Tools setup disk' and choose 'Open'.
    5. Start 'PrlTools.exe' from there.
    Will it help?

If no, please open 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel' -> 'Folder Options' -> 'View' tab and under 'Hidden files and folders' select 'Show hidden files and folders'.
Will you be able to find 'parallels-tools-install.log' and 'setupapi.log' files now?

    Best regards,
    Stacey

Thanks for the suggestion. Got as far as the 'Parallels Tools setup disk' window but there is nothing that says open from that window, and nothing that says"prtTools.exe

Remember i have to cancel the installation before it actually makes an attempt to install tools or i have to restart windows. I even tried to un-install Tools using "system tasks" "add or remove programs" in windows and i can't do that either. It stalls the removal process as well. I did install 5584. After having done so tools installed to 97% but stalled again. Then reverted to the previous behaviour.

    Sorry Stacey;
I did not try to use the article because i had no knowledge of it's existence.

Having read this article under the problem description: which says
Parallels Tools package is missing in the Windows "Add/Remove Programs".
I find that the described symptoms "Windows "Start" - "Control Panel" "Add or Remove Programs" list doesn't show Parallels Tools." is not my problem.

The Windows Start Control Panel Add or Remove Programs" list DOES show Parallels Tools.

The problem is that the install wizard stalls when i ask windows to remove Parallels Tools.
The install wizard stalls when ever I try to install or remove anything in connection with Parallels Tools.

    Hello,

but please try to use this article, even if you have Parallels Tools in Control Panel.

    Best regards,
    Stacey

    Stacey:

Thank you very much for your assistance. I fully appreciate your help.
I followed your instructions which were very easy to follow to the letter.
The install went to 90% and stalled again. I waited for 3 minutes just to
    make sure.

Looks like the only alternative may be to remove all VM files, windows XP
and all associated files then re-install the whole show. Too bad because
this alternative may take more time than it's worth.

Perhaps i can sell Parallels to someone who may get more use of it.

    Best regards.

OK I’m back. Thought I would up grade Parallels to the
Latest build and try installing Parallel tools again.
Some thing again. Got as far as the install wizard
Which showed the diolog box "Parallel tools is configuring your software."
Then three green bars, then ALL STOP. Tried to cancel the install “NO SOAP.

    Oh well

Went thru the entire process you suggested. Setup status went to 80% with the green bars. Installation froze again, and windows had to be reset again.

Tried it again for good measure. Same results.
Tried to quit Parallels tools setup with out results.
I did try to open a desktop PDF file while this was going
on. The file did open after a minute. Another program
took about 2 minutes to open while Parallels hour
glass kept going and going and going and it wouldn't
    quit.

So the parallels tools thing is playing coco and
once again tools will not install.
