Load backup .hdd

I had a .hdd that I was using, and Mac crashed, trashing the hard drive. I created a new vm with a new .hdd. I want now to load the old .hdd (which I was able to get from the trashed hard drive). I want to take some files (windows based) from the backup .hdd and save them.

How do I load a .hdd file without losing my current .hdd file?

Just assign it. go to edit -> VM -> add -> hard disk -> Use an existing virtual hard disk image.
