Issue: Launching VM stored on a network drive causes Parallels to hang

    •Mac OS 10.5.2
    •Build 5584
    •Mac mini (Core Duo 1.66)
    •2GB
•1x120GB/network drive located on a gigabit NAS
    •No BootCamp config
    •No upgrade
    •Build 5584 - first build I tried this with
    •Parallels Tools installed
•Crash Log is too large to upload (200 KB)

The VM in question runs perfectly when launched from the internal drive but the disk access is rather slow due to the slow HD in my Mac mini. I have a NAS on my gigabit network that has a fast 7200rpm RAID 0 setup so I figured I would copy my VM to it so that I could take advantage of the faster disk access. Launching the VM from the NAS causes Parallels to hang (shows as unresponsive in Activity Monitor). Activity Monitor shows the kernel_task jumping to 26.1% CPU usage immediately after Parallels hangs.

Force quitting Parallels does not work. Parallels disappears from Activity Monitor yet it remains in the dock and the kernel_task CPU usage remains the same. I have to restart the Mac mini to resolve the issue.

I just use a La Cie 800 firewire for my VM and it keeps on trucking
back / clone up to a second and that will run too

    10.4.11 WinXp sp 2 - 3.0

could it be a network permissions issue?

    Issue resolved

VM is now running off of a shared drive from another Mac. I assume Parallels does not like running off of an ext2 formatted remote drive.

I love the fact that my Mac mini is running a VM off off a 7200rpm drive via gigabit! The data load times are substantially faster than those I experienced when running the VM off of the Mac mini's internal drive.
