My Windows was rebooting (probably to install an update?), and showed a screen with just "Restarting..." and a loading indicator, for what felt like half an hour. So I thought it had gotten stuck, and tried, in this order:

    1. 'Restart' from Parallels. This did nothing. (Makes sense; the guest OS is already restarting.)
    2. 'Reset' from Parallels. This caused Parallels to beachball. Uh-oh...

So I force-quit Parallels, tried to launch again, and tried to start the VM. Still got stuck.

So I force-quit it again, also force-quit prl_disp_service, and tried to launch Parallels again.

This was probably a bad idea. The VM started to boot again, except now I got:

The virtual Hard Disk 1 has wrong access permissions or is used with another virtual machine.

    And then:

There is no operating system installed in this virtual machine.

From a fresh Windows VM, I added the old VM's hard disk as a secondary disk. It does mount. I can read files from it.

Long story short: Is there anything I can do to

    a) get a more detailed message than "has wrong access permissions" or "there is no operating system installed"?
    b) somehow repair this VM?

Wow. Pretty much the same happened to me today. Really not sure what to do. Tried to contact support but no reply.

    Hello,

Please collect a technical report (click Parallels icon > Help > Send technical data > check "Attach screenshots..." > press Send Report) and send the report's 9-digit ID in a reply to this post.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

I got this issue myself today. It happened right after updating to Version 26.1.1 (57288). I noticed after the update completed the VM was trying to load but was spinning for a good long time. So, I force quit Parallels and tried restarting Parallels and the VM. Then got the message, "The virtual Hard Disk 1 has wrong access permissions or is used with another virtual machine." So, I tried contacting support and got no reply on Facebook Messenger (I don't have twitter, and the KB directed me to this thread). So, giving up on support I tried restoring a Time Machine Backup of the .pvm file and open it as another VM. That seems to have worked. After the VM prompted me to update Parallels toolbox and restarting windows it seems to work fine. Hope that helps!
