My Windows was rebooting (probably to install an update?), and showed a screen with just "Restarting..." and a loading indicator, for what felt like half an hour. So I thought it had gotten stuck, and tried, in this order:
1. 'Restart' from Parallels. This did nothing. (Makes sense; the guest OS is already restarting.)
2. 'Reset' from Parallels. This caused Parallels to beachball. Uh-oh...
So I force-quit Parallels, tried to launch again, and tried to start the VM. Still got stuck.
So I force-quit it again, also force-quit prl_disp_service, and tried to launch Parallels again.
This was probably a bad idea. The VM started to boot again, except now I got:
The virtual Hard Disk 1 has wrong access permissions or is used with another virtual machine.
And then:
There is no operating system installed in this virtual machine.
From a fresh Windows VM, I added the old VM's hard disk as a secondary disk. It does mount. I can read files from it.
Long story short: Is there anything I can do to
a) get a more detailed message than "has wrong access permissions" or "there is no operating system installed"?
b) somehow repair this VM?
