I'm attempting to convert a win xp virtual machine created in ver 3.0 to ver 5.0. I've made a backup of the original and am at step 1 of 4, preparing to upgrade your virtual machine. The upgrade bar only goes part way and then seems to hang. It gets as far as the center of the word virtual on the screen. What can I do to make this work? This is a trial version. I've already upgraded my mac to snow leopard and can't go back.

Virtual Machine upgrade hangs on step 2 searching for new devices

For some reason the upgrade that I am doing from Parallels 3 to 5 is hung in step 2, searching for new devices. It has been there 4 hours now. The previous VM was for Windows XP SP2. Is it ever going to time out and move on?

I upgraded from 3 to 5, plus Tiger to S/Leopard on the past weekend and found the same hang. After waiting all night (I went to bed), I quit the installer (it was still on step 1) and took my chances. When I restarted, the installer moved to step 2 and continued. It also hung at step 2 so I quit again and restarted. It then finished just fine.

The only odd thing was it could not find was a driver for the video card - I installed it on a White iMac. Once the tools installed all worked fine. One thing to note was that the default settings took too much ram (on the White iMac it maxes at 3gb) causing the iMac to freeze and pause. I set the Ram down to just under 1GB and changed the preference to run the iMac (rather than the virtual) in performance mode.

    Was having the same trouble...

My situation: Upgraded to Snow Leopard without realizing that Parallels V3 would not work on it. Purchased and installed the upgrade and it hung at step 2 (of the VM upgrade) for three hours. After reading this forum, I force quit Parallels and restarted the MAC.

Once I got back on, I started Parallels and the same VM and it logged in just fine, but without my settings and asking me to register XP PRO. I skipped that prompt and waited a little while. Parallels then took control and resumed at step three of the virtual machine upgrade. That's where I am now. It's been about 20 minutes and the progress bar is moving, albeit very slowly.

I will post an update once it is complete.

    continued from previous...

Okay, step three of the VM upgrade stopped responding after about a half hour. The progress bar remained in the same spot for 30 minutes so I force quit, rebooted and restarted Parallels. Once again, it allowed me to log onto the VM but it did not have my desktop items and I was prompted to activate Windows XP. I skipped the prompt and waited about 3 minutes and like last time, Parallels VM upgrade took control and it resumed the upgrade at step number four.

This step completed successfully and the VM started with all of my personal preferences in tact. The only preference that was overridden was Parrallels wanted to run in cohesive mode... which I don't prefer. But everything is available on my VM as before. It still prompts me to activate my Windows software which I will no problem.

I am left wondering if I should have upgraded Parallels from 3 to 5 prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard. I don't know if it would have been any easier.

As I said in the previous post... people considering to upgrade the MAC OS to Snow Leopard should be aware that Parallels v3 will NOT even try to work. So a good backup prior should be performed.

All in all, my opinion is that this upgrade (near 5 hours) took a lot of patience and a lot of time. But, if I am as happy with the saftware as I have been, I'm sure it will be worth it. Parallels has been a powerful tool in my productivity and ability to do business.

    Thumbs up!
