    PD v4.0 on Debian-Lenny-amd64

Legacy guests (I tested with OS/2 and eCS) are missing the RTC and thus correct timestamps. RTC (clock) in guest receives time on boot-up, but does not proceed. This results in several nasty things:

    a) files generated it the guest all carry identical time staps - that of boot time.
    b) some games run exactly the same sequence ever and ever because they rely on system time.
    c) unpredictable problems when communicating with other computers via network. One example only: ping response is always 0 sec.

My personal use of Parallels-Workstation is to make use of the well known support for OS/2 and eCS on modern hardware with Linux hosts. Running only 'modern operating systems' as a guest does not require PW - that can be done with VBox.

PW 4.0 definitely has a nice and comfortable UI (user interface), but as long as it lacks such a basic feature it cannot compete with other virtualisation techniques and even PW v2.2.

    Best regards,
    Ingo

Is nobody else out there missing that feature?
I really don't understand why this feature was dropped, it workes fine in PW 2.2, VBox and other virtualisation - why not in PD 4.0?

Will that be solved till end of September?

    Ingo,

Fix of CMOS operation was added to the recent Parallels Desktop 4 for Windows & Linux update -
    http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=94651

Even though this fix didn't get to the official Release Notes, we expect it to be resolved now -
Please let us know if latest build helps you to resolve your issue.

    Regards,
    Max

    Need trial-key

    Thanks tacid_one, for the information,

I was able to download said build, but don't get a valid evaluation key. The one I can obtain via the web-site is outdated and the very same which was distributed just after PW4.0 was released in September:

"Your trial activation key is listed below:

PRODUCT : Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Windows and Linux
    ACTIVATION KEY : Q2J7B8-...........-Z2ZSBT
    START DATE : 2009/09/01
    END DATE : 2009/09/15

    Please help,
    Ingo

    Big improvement -Gatulations!

    Max,

    thanks for the key!

Here my first impressions with the new buid:

    1. Time keeping now works fine, checked with eCS 1.2r. System clock is synchronised and even can be set/adjusted. RTC now shows up in the guest, using IRQ8 and I/O ports 0x70 + 0x71 - all ok!

    2. German keyboard is perfect. All keys work as indicated on my keyboard. Also all 3-key symbols like @,€,µ,²,³ ,\,{,[,],},| have now been implemented correctly!

    3. One thing however I am missing: Debian-Lenny does not have 'dkms' in the repository. So, if there comes a kernel update there is no easy way to rebuild just parallels-modules (like parallels-config in 2.2). Same applies to Ubuntu-Hardy, where 'dkms' is not officially supported.

    Will have to try more.

    So, my first impression:
it really improved much - will test further next days.

    THANKS,
    Ingo
