When I start up my XP session, Windows starts fine and seems to load everything but then I can never access or click on any program, command or window. Everything is just sitting there frozen. Have tried shutting down and restarting, rebooted session, and reboot Mac and still all frozen.

    It's a mouse/keyboard driver problem

It's because the mouse and keyboard is not recognized inside Windows. If I activate the mouse/trackpad under USB settings, then the keyboard works but still no mouse in Windows and no keyboard in Mac OSX.

    Help, please.

    Mouse and keyboard not working

Here is a "me too". Upgraded XP SP3 from Parallels Desktop 3 where everything worked fine, and now my keyboard and mouse does not work in the VM. I can grab the USB mouse and keyboard, then it works sort of in Windows (cannot see a mouse cursor but I can see it moves by the effect it has). But obviously I am then keyboardless and mouseless in my Mac OS X OS, which is unacceptable.

Tried reinstalling VMWare tools, I have no other mouse drivers, and also tried reinserting the usb plug from my mouse/keyboard - no difference. I am not reinstalling, please help.

Uninstalling Parallels Tools fixes but causes more problems

After uninstalling, the mouse and keyboard work fine but Windows gives major PCI and video driver errors all over the place.

I got it to work, but...

    ...it was quite a mission.

I had to uninstall the parallels tools by connecting the keyboard as usb device (this disabled access to the host).
I also had to navigate through device manager and uninstall all mouse, keyboard and hid devices (this is tricky as you loose your keyboard when removing the hid device).
I then shut the vm down.
I went to //'s preferences, reset the usb assignments (it was empty but just to make sure), then rebooted. The mouse and keyboard worked fine - I could grab/ungrab them.
I then re-installed // tools, rebooted and now it seems ok.

Good Grief, As I have Fusion on the same machine I will wait for a fix. I have told these people I am a Consultant with MUCH experience in OS's. They sent a link to Server but not Desktop 4 Beta. This is the curse of improper testing.

    Y'all be cool,

PS: I filled out the support form.

This is happening on my MacBook Pro as well.

How do I correct this? Everything works fine, mouse works, but as soon as I touch a key on the keyboard the entire VM freezes. I have to Quit.

I will try to install the Apple Bootcamp drivers again to see if that fixes it. Any other ideas anyone? This sucks since I did not backup before upgrading from 3 to 4.

Update: I have reinstalled the Apple Bootcamp drivers and added a Keyboard in the USB settings as described above. No good. Anytime I press a key on the keyboard the entire VM freezes. How do I fix this? 3.0 was alot better than 4.0 - it worked!

    Success...

I just want to confirm that I was able to get things working using pwnell's steps above.

I was upgrading a Book Camp Parallels 3 VM.

I had the same problem with the keyboard locking out the mouse and keyboard on the first keystroke.

I uninstalled Parallels Tools and rebooted

I canceled the attempt of windows to install new hardware.

I uninstalled as many mouse and keyboard drivers from the device manager as I could (was able to remove the HDI drivers) using a USB keyboard.

    I restarted the VM

I then installed the Parallels Tools and allowed it to restart the VM.

I now have drivers that sound right in Device Manager: "Parallels Mouse Synchronization Device"

I also found that there was a bad com port driver that was keeping me from using my keyspan USB serial port. I uninstalled that and restarted and I was able to use SerialClient again for com1.

So, I'm happy again. But, disappointed that the upgrade process did not account for all of this.

Oh, man. I do not want to go through that process..... What a pain in the ... Since I have been using parallels for quicken and thought that it would be a good idea to upgrade to be able to possibly play some games, instead of booting to bootcamp. Boy was I wrong. I can't get control of the windows xp. Just freezes. I will look into the drivers that were installed. I am just running a macbookpro and mighty mouse but neither the mouse or keyboard works. Ugh.

    Same symptoms and fix

    MacBook Pro/Bootcamp/Windows XP SP3/Upgrade parallels 3.0 to 4.0

upon first keystroke, keyboard and mouse would freeze

fix above works, and you can't skip the step that removes the keyboard and mouse drivers. I had no HDI driver installed and did not need to remove it.
